Moose, My First Mate
For the most part, I’ll be adventuring out on to the Vintage Highway solo, though the fun part will be when my friends and family can catch up with me during my excursions in wine country.
I will have a traveling companion much of the time, however. My puppy, Moose, an Italian Greyhound, will be coming along with me once he matures a bit. At the time of this writing, January 24, 2010, Moose is just eight months old, so he is really an active little guy.
Moose, which is short for “Mussolini,” is nearly full grown at about 14 pounds, which makes him perfect for riding in my truck and hanging out in the Airstream. He’s compact, but quick. . .and he never seems to run out of gas.
My two big challenges with Moose are he only responds to commands when he feels like it or when food is involved. And, sorry to say, he has not achieved full control over bathroom visits. He was doing great until the height of winter hit. He hates to go out in the snow and rain, so I have to watch him carefully.
Still, I love him to death and he is a wonderful companion.
He won’t be accompanying me on my first trip, though, because he has a date with the vet to take care of, well, a guy thing. Once this routine surgery is accomplished, I’m hoping he settles down. We’ll see!

This blog will follow my monthly trips into wine country across California, Oregon, Washington and, some day, around the country. As the owner of Carpe Vino, a wine shop, wine bar and fine dining restaurant in Auburn, CA, I have direct access to the leading wineries and winemakers in the business. I’ll be traveling the back roads of wine country to find the true gems, small production wines made by truly passionate people. In my nightly blogs on the road, I’ll tell their stories and describe what I’ve seen, learned and tasted.
